Choosing a purging compound is not always as simple as picking the product on the shelf. Blow molding machines run with different materials, temperatures and setups, so the format of the purge can matter too.
Granules and emulsions can both be useful, but they are not automatically interchangeable. The better choice depends on the machine, resin, processing conditions and the kind of buildup you’re trying to remove.
When Granules Make Sense
Granular purging compounds are familiar to many processors because they run through the machine much like a plastic resin. They can be useful during material or colour changes and for clearing leftover polymer from the screw, barrel and flow path.
For a production line that changes materials regularly, a granulated Purging Compound for Blow Molding can be convenient to handle, measure and introduce into the process. The exact grade still matters, though. A compound suited to one processing temperature or resin may not be the right choice for another.
Where Does Emulsion Fit?
Emulsion-based purging products take a different approach and can be useful for particular cleaning requirements. They may be considered when the process calls for something other than a conventional granular purge.
That doesn’t mean an emulsion is automatically better for difficult contamination. The machine design, temperature range and residue involved still need to be considered.
So, which should you use?
Start with the equipment and process, not the format name.
Look at the Machine Too
Extrusion blow molding and accumulator blow molding do not purge in exactly the same way. Operating conditions, screw design, die setup and the material being processed can all affect the purge procedure.
UNICLEANPLUS provides purging compounds for blow molding along with technical guidance on grade selection and application. That can be useful when you’re dealing with several resins or production temperatures and don’t want to guess your way through a changeover.
What About Temperature?
This is one of the details that can easily get overlooked.
The purging compound needs to suit the processing temperature of the resin and machine. Using the wrong product at the wrong temperature can lead to poor results, extra residue or a purge that simply doesn’t do the job you expected.
Before choosing between granule and emulsion, check the recommended processing range and the material you are trying to remove.
There Isn’t One Universal Answer
A processor working mainly with standard resins may approach purging differently from a line handling engineering or high-temperature plastics. Heavy colour changes, stubborn contamination and frequent material changes can also affect the decision.
UNICLEANPLUS offers different purging solutions for blow molding applications and can help with grade selection, samples and technical support.
The useful question isn’t really, “Are granules better than emulsions?”
It is: Which format and grade fit this machine, this resin and this purge job?
Get those three things right, and the purge is far more likely to do what you need it to do.
